In 2011 New Zealand’s Ministry of Education decided that large, open plan classrooms are the way of the future. They embarked on a policy to replace the country’s classrooms with these Modern Learning Environments in which children are expected to learn in a ‘self-directed’ way.
In a new report, Senior Fellow Dr Michael Johnston examines the Modern Learning Environments project.
The report questions the assumptions on which Modern Learning Environments are based. Is the future likely to be so different from the past that such an educational revolution is justified? What is the role of digital technology in the classroom? Is there any evidence that children learn better in Modern Learning Environments than in traditional classrooms?
We invite you to the launch of Michael’s report, at which he will discuss these questions and more.
Venue: Wellington
